Encoders & Decoders

Base64 Encoder / Decoder

Encode and decode UTF-8 text or a small file as standard or URL-safe Base64, entirely in the browser.

Processed locally. Nothing from the editor is stored.

How to use Base64

Text is encoded as UTF-8 bytes and then as Base64. URL-safe mode uses - and _ and omits padding. Decoding accepts standard or URL-safe input. If the bytes are not UTF-8, the tool still lets you download them.

  1. Choose Encode or Decode, and Standard or URL-safe.
  2. Paste text or upload a file up to 2 MB.
  3. Copy the text result or download the decoded bytes when the output is not text.

Examples

Encode a string with an accent

DevToolPilot café encodes the é as UTF-8 bytes C3 A9 before Base64. Decoding returns the same string.

Prepare a token fragment

URL-safe output can be placed in a query string without extra encoding of + and /.

Questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding. Anyone can decode it. Do not use it to hide a secret.

Why did decoding not show text?

The bytes were not valid UTF-8. Download the binary result instead of forcing a broken string.
